Ever heard someone say, "I'm not a math person"?

One of the important skills which we all need to develop is learning how to talk to ourselves about mathematics in particular and STEM education in general. We encourage positive self-talk in our conversations with learners.

At learningnow.co, we discourage people from attempting to labelling people as a "math people" or "not math people". While it is true that some people are naturally inclined to mathematics, it is also true (and more important) that mathematics is a skill that can be learned. These facts are well-known in the modern psychology literature. Furthermore, psychologists have long known that understanding that mathematics is a skill that can be learned (across race and gender) helps people learn mathematics better (see [1] below). Classifying people as "not math people" creates a social permission structure for avoiding an important skill.

We encourage our students to engage in self-talk which respects our modern pyschological understanding of how the brain works and empowers our students.

"If I spend some focused time learning mathematics and make sure I practice, I can learn all of the mathematics I will need."
