Does AI make our current educational system obsolete?

learningnow.co • March 2026

No, certainly not. We do need to modify our educational practices accordingly. We'll explain in detail, but let's provide some background first.

Lecture-style education doesn't work, and we've known this for decades.

It is well-known that lectures, by themselves, are inefficient at helping students learn. This is why almost every educational institution uses several different alternatives to the staid lecture format. Laboratory courses, group work, "active learning", presentations, oral exams, think-pair-share exercises, etc. are all designed to educate students better than a traditional lecture course.

This is why AI chatbots are not a foundation to our educational practices.

You cannot upload information directly into your brain. Analogous to the limitations of the lecture format, naive use of an AI chatbot is an inefficient method for learning. For this reason, learningnow.co focuses principally on direct interactions between mentors and students, not on using AI.

AI is, however, a useful tool!

For some purposes, however, AI tools are incredibly helpful. We encourage students to weigh their use of AI carefully relative to the type of material they are studying and their educational goals. In some cases, we do not recommend using AI at all. In other cases, we encourage students to use AI tools for grammar only, preventing the chatbot from doing more detailed restructuring of the material. We also encourage students to transform their use of chatbots to an active learning process rather than a simple conversation. Students need to make sure to take notes, reprocess the chatbot output in different ways, request or generate visualizations of the output, place the output learned from the chatbot into a broader context, make sure to drive the conversation with clarifying questions, and demand that the chatbot produce good external links and references. Finally, we remind all of our students that chatbots can hallucinate incorrect results, and we maintain an internal repository of chats which show how deeply the chatbots can fail.

People are the future!
